The Minister of Education, Dr. Valentine Uwamariya has told teachers to make change in further improving the quality of education. Teachers have also been encouraged to take English proficiency courses to master the language as the major medium of instruction.    

Dr. Uwamariya was presiding over the 2021 national celebrations to mark the World Teachers’ Day at Kigali Convention Centre.

“The coming academic year requires all stakeholders to make change and I would like to say that quality education is vital for sustainable development. The success to this change lies in a teacher who is the pillar, but who also needs to get support, especially from parents”, says the Minister.

According to the Minister, this call is intended to bring recovery to the education system, especially introducing remedial teaching hours to facilitate slow learners.

The World Teachers’ Day celebrations were also characterized by rewarding best forming teachers in transforming their welfare, the community around and their role in promoting quality education through teaching.

Stella Christine Manishimwe, a teacher at Ecole Primaire  Gisozi II   is one of the teachers who were rewarded a motorcycle  for having used well the loan acquired from Umwalimu SACCO to establish business in poultry and the sale of timber. 

“I call upon fellow teachers to stop relying on monthly salaries, but to think of alternative sources of income to change their welfare and the community around them”, Manishimwe says.

The Minister also said that in the last academic year, the Government through the Ministry of Education has achieved a lot, including the construction of around 23,000 classes   at Secondary level and 28,000 for pre-and primary level.  She also noted that 11,942 and 1,162 teachers have also been recruited in the general basic and TVET education respectively. 

During this occasion, the Minister also revealed that the ministry of Education is striving to promote courses in continuous Professional Development (CPD), teacher management system and English proficiency to have more skilled teachers.
