Support For The School-Based Mentorship Project
PROJECT TIMELINE
2012 – 2013
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The year 2012 was a revolutionary year in the history of in-service teacher development in Rwanda. UNICEF, DfID and USAID through the Education Development Centre- implemented Literacy, Language and Learning Initiative and other partners came together to support Rwanda Education Board to institutionalize the School-based Mentorship Programme (SBMP), evolving from the Rwanda English In Action Programme (REAP). UNICEF committed to model effective in-service teacher development in partnership with IEE.
Through IEE, in a school-based approach, UNICEF placed technical experts in education at the school-level to provide support to teachers in pedagogy and English language. This model programme, running parallel to the national School-Based Mentorship Programme, became successful and through UNICEF advocacy and evidence, the UNICEF-IEE School-Based Mentorship model project was scaled up by Ministry of Education/ Rwanda Education Board to all schools in Rwanda. As of January 2017, each school had to appoint a School-Based Mentor, under government payroll, who could work with their colleagues at the school-level to improve teaching and learning.
