SUPPORT FOR PRE-AND IN-SERVICE TEACHER DEVELOPMENT FOR QUALITY RESULTS FOR CHILDREN
PROJECT TIMELINE
May 2018 – April 2019
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
IEE implemented the Support for pre-and in-service teacher development for quality results for children project which was aimed at:
- Improved pre-service teachers training. Supported by UNICEF, in collaboration with Rwanda Education Board, University of Rwanda College of Education staff, Teacher Training College Tutors, and other education professionals, IEE facilitated a series of three workshops to draft a new curriculum for Teacher Training Colleges. After the testing, the curriculum will be printed and distributed to 16 Teacher Training Colleges.
- Improved in-service teacher training. Since 2016, every government school in Rwanda has one school-based mentor, whose role is to facilitate and build capacity of teachers. Rwanda Education Board has expanded the National School-Based Mentorship Programme to include 832 sector-based mentor trainers (two in each of the 416 sectors). This project used the mentor guidance manual and four school-based continuous professional development manuals developed by IEE to train sector-based mentor trainers at national, district and sector levels. Based on the initial UNICEF-IEE school-level model, sector-based mentor trainers trained school-based mentors in turn, who then trained teachers in their respective schools.
As a result of this project, 16 Teacher Training Colleges will have competency-based inclusive,
and gender-sensitive syllabi, and 832 sector-based mentor trainers have improved capacity to support school-based mentor training.
