ROLLOUT FOR ACTIVE LEARNING AND LIFE SKILLS MANUAL FOR TEACHER TRAINERS IN RWANDA

PROJECT TIMELINE

2014

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In support to pre-service teacher training, UNICEF collaborated with IEE to rollout the UNICEF supported Active Learning and Life Skills Manual for Teacher Trainers in Rwanda trainings by involving Teacher Training College (TTC) Tutors in practical activities towards delivering a teacher-trainee centred TTC curriculum. This was intended to equip Tutors and teachers with child-centred interactive teaching methodologies, so that they deliver an education that prepares Rwandan children to meet increasing demands of the immediate Rwandan society and the world at large.

IEE mobilized TTC Tutors to include active learning methods in their teaching, for enhancement and assurance of quality of pre-service teacher education, demonstrating conscious inclusion of life skills in day-today active teaching and learning, modelling strategies towards ensuring to know and understand learners, caring for vulnerable learners, application of active learning classroom contexts, and implication of these considerations to the in-service work life of teachers.

IEE Mentors coached TTC Tutors to appreciate the indispensable link between pre-service and in-service practice for teachers; the need for TTC Tutors to demonstrate what their teacher trainees must become when they graduate and go out to teach. IEE Mentors also engaged TTC Tutors in making connections between teacher trainees’ pre-service training and application of this knowledge in primary school contexts making lessons relevant to young learners’ learning abilities.

Monitoring indicated improvement in TTC Tutors’ capacities in delivery of teaching to teacher trainees.
