November 11, 2020

As part of regular, inhouse staff capacity building activities, Inspire, Educate and Empower Rwanda (IEE) held a workshop on November 10, 2020 where all the new Pedagogical Advisors as well as the Continuous Professional Development Advisors (CPDAs) were able to meet their Coordinators (CPD Coordinators and Pedagogical Coordinator) respectively.

This workshop was meant to help the new 16 Pedagogical Advisors meet their Coordinator as well as the CPD Coordinators (who are new) to meet the CPDAs and to find a way of working on work plans to ensure that they are realistically implementable in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) all over the country.

According to Sosthene Ntibanyurwa, one of the CPD Coordinators, the workshop was necessary because it helped them to get in touch with the District based CPD Advisors.

‘’Previously, we were all strangers to each other yet these are people we are going to be working with and therefore we needed to know each other so as we develop a connections and relationship with the people we shall be supporting,’’ he said

The workshop provided an opportunity for the CPD Coordinator and CPDAs to reflect on previous, ongoing work plans, onto which they built  further, to guide ongoing activities in support of in-service teacher development through the School-based Mentorship Programme.

Paul Ssali, the second CPD Coordinator noted that besides the orientation and getting to know each other, there was a need to outline activities that are supposed to be done per quarter or per month and see that there is a uniform approach towards implementing the agreed-on action plan.

He notes that he strongly believes it was achieved because at the end of the workshop, the CPD Coordinators had a clear picture from the CPDAs sharing ideas on what exactly each one does and what they have been doing.

“We integrated and came up with a list of activities that we expect to be done in the first and second quarter as well as monthly work plans which we expect each one of them to refer to as they work” he said.

Hakizimana Silas, the Pedagogical Coordinator, also notes that the workshop came in at the right time as it gave him the opportunity to share ideas about the work plans with the Pedagogical Advisors. He says that through this sharing of ideas, it helped each one of them to know what they are expected of them when they reach the TTCs.

He also says that it helped them to share their ideas as far as the proposed work plan is concerned.

‘’We wanted to hear from them, what their opinions of the proposed work plan are and what can be added to the previous work plan that had been designed such that we can have a harmonized work plan ready to be followed once they start their work,’’ he concluded.

These activities are being implemented in the context of the Pre-and in-service teacher development for quality results for children programme which is supported by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and implemented by IEE, in support Rwanda Education Board efforts in pre and in-service teacher development for quality learning under the competence-based curriculum.
